Task of the Day: Make Liquid Laundry Detergent and Improve Laundry Room
After today, you will have made an awesome countertop cleanser, Task Mama's "Punch it out" (homemade shout), antibacterial soft scrub cleaner, and liquid laundry detergent in your cleaning tool belt! It has been a great homemade cleanser project week and I am pleased with how the cleansers are working. When I first made my own laundry detergent years ago each batch was for a 5 gallon container and the soap had to be grated and boiled! With one batch, I felt like it lasted a long time..too long, and because I didn't like all the effort I had to put into making and storing, it was so much easier to grab some Arm & Hammer off the shelf at Wal-Mart bring it home and it was ready to use. I was very excited to find this laundry detergent recipe, because really it couldn't be any easier. I can make it very quickly, with little to no effort. I made the liquid laundry detergent on Monday so I could start testing it. I have been washing load after load with it the last several days. I have been very impressed with the smell (I like for my clothes to have a scent so I added 3 tablespoons Downy Unstoppables "Spring" to the warm water when making batch). I also let the warm water and ingredients sit for a while before adding the cool water. If you prefer fragrance free detergent don't add Downy Unstoppables to your homemade liquid detergent. I really wanted this laundry detergent to prove itself by washing my baby food stained clothes with it and no spot remover treatment was added before washing. When I pulled the stained clothes out of the wash, I have to say I was not impressed. The spots were still on several shirts. So I ran the exact load a second time with GAIN apple mango tango (which is the detergent I have been using) to see if the spots would come out with the store bought detergent. There was no change in the spots at all. So I began to be more open minded to the homemade liquid detergent. It was also hard for me to NOT see suds in the wash, but I have learned since, that suds do not equal clean. I have washed about 15-20 loads throughout the last few days including my kitchen and bath towels, poor rags, jeans, sheets, whites, colors, dark's and dedicates and have been pleased. As for the spots in the shirts I was able to get them out with the homemade shout...which I love! Remember my dress? The first greasy looking spot on the back that was on it when I bought it from the store, the spot is hardly noticeable! I am very happy about that. Oh, the many products I have used, Oxy Clean laundry boost, Shout spray, Oxy Clean spray, Oxy Clean rubbing gel with pads, alcohol, hairspray, soaking with Arm & Hammer liquid detergent, and I had even soaked it in with the Gain Apple Tango Mango all with NO luck at all. I am happy to see some improvement with the homemade Shout, even though it didn't get it completely out. If I work on it, I bet I can get it all out.
Today's task is to not only make laundry detergent (for those that are making the cleansers with us this week), but to improve the place you do your laundry. Doing just the simplest little things sometimes will make the whole dreaded experience easier to take on, and accomplish. By adding funny sayings, a usable shelf, organizing a cabinet, making the sorting system functional, adding a chalk board to help you stay on task, dusting off the top of the cabinets, cleaning out the closet, sweeping, moping, vacuuming, or just by adding some music to your laundry room environment are a few examples that might make doing laundry less of a chore. Pick anything that YOU think would improve the way YOU feel when you walk into your laundry room...and make it happen today!
Post your before and after pictures of your improved laundry room, or pictures of your liquid laundry detergent victories or comment when your task is accomplished!
